The Medjay were members of an Ancient Egyptian military who acted as desert scouts and protectors of areas of pharaonic interest. An elite police force, the Medjay were often used to protect valuable areas, like capital cities, royal cemeteries, and the borders of Egypt. The Medjay symbol was the all-seeing Eye of Horus.

Originally, the word Medjay used to refer to the inhabitants of the land of Medja, an ancient Nubian tribe located in the modern Sudan, which was subjugated and conscripted by the rulers of Egypt. The term later evolved to describe the Pharaoh's police forces during the New Kingdom period as Egyptians were integrated into the Nubian army, which was reformed into a more guardianship role.

At the time of the reign of Cleopatra, the role had faded away with Bayek being the last Medjay. As such and before he founded the Assassin Brotherhood, Bayek was acting as some kind of sheriff and protector of his community.
