A part of the famous Cuerdale Viking hoard buried in 905, Lancashire, England / c. Viking Age

At the beginning of the so-called Viking Age, Scandinavians wanted to acquire wealth, like this hoard of silver items. However, not all Vikings were warlike. If riches could be acquired without combat, Scandinavians would happily take that route.

During the settlement period, the Vikings ensured that their war bands were able to move swiftly and easily; this gave them a distinct advantage over larger groups that required logistical support.
