Wulfhere, Archbishop of York and the person who issued the styca coin seen here, was eager to welcome new members to his Church. Through his efforts and those of his clergy, many pagan settlers became Christian.

Members of the religious and secular elite also helped to convert the settlers. Powerful Ango-Saxons rubbed shoulders with powerful Scandinavians. This gave them the chance to introduce Christian ideas to the pagain chieftains.

The settlers had come from many different places, and it is possible that some of them had encoountered Christians before. Their possibly familiarity with Christianity miht have made them more willing to convert.
