Hippolyta's Belt

Hippolyta's Belt was a belt belonging to Hippolyta, an Amazonian queen and daughter of the Greek god of war, Ares. It was part of an armor set attributed to various heroes in Greek mythology.

History

According to Greek mythology, King Eurystheas of Mycenae set as the ninth task of Herakles to retrieve the girdle of Hippolyta. With his companions in tow, Herakles reached the city of Themiskyra, and found Hippolyta there, convincing her to give up the belt. However, due to the meddling of the goddess Hera, the Amazons attacked Herakles and his companions, and he had to kill Hippolyta. In the end, he brought the belt to Eurystheas, who gifted it to his daughter, Admete.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the belt was in the possession of a mercenary. The Spartan misthios Kassandra crossed paths with the mercenary and claimed the belt for herself.[2]
