Herod I of Judea (c. 74 or 73 BCE – c. 4 BCE or 1 BCE), also known as Herod the Great, was a Roman client king of Judea from 37 BCE to his death.

His rule was considered tyrannical and he was opposed by the Hidden Ones. In addition, the Roman general Gaius Julius Rufio was making plans to visit Herod in an attempt to secure an alliance with Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius.
