Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston
Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston was an English Prime Minister.
In 1857, a contest was held to find a design for the new Foreign Office building. Though he placed second, Prime Minister Derby hired George Gilbert Scott for the job because he loved Scott's Gothic style. Though before Scott could begin, Lord Palmerston was elected Prime Minister, who demanded that Scott build the Foreign Office in a Classical style. The Foreign Office was finally built in 1868, in a Classical Italianate style, which both Scott and Palmerston disliked.[1]
