Gruesome Mattock

The Gruesome Mattock was a rare heavy weapon used in the 1st century BCE Egypt. Worthy of its name, the war hammer left its victims in a gruesome state.

During his hunt for the Order of the Ancients, the Medjay Bayek of Siwa found this weapon in the inventories of blacksmiths and on bodies and in chests during his travels throughout Egypt.[1]

Behind the scenes

The model of the Gruesome Mattock, a weapon in Assassin's Creed: Origins, is based on the Roman Dolabra pickaxe. However, it is depicted in game as a heavy war hammer with the blade protector depicted as crushing teeth. Generally speaking, war hammers were not used in ancient warfare. The model of the Mattock was recycled as the Sledgehammer, a weapon in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, and its kind.
