Baldwin II ceding Al-Aqsa Mosque to Payens and Saint-Omer

Godfrey de Saint-Omer was a Flemish knight and one of the founders of the publicly known Templar Order.

In the early 12th century, Bernard de Clairvaux sent Saint-Omer and eight other trusted Templars, including future Grand Master Hugues de Payens, to the Holy Land to find Solomon's Temple. Around 1119, King Baldwin II of Jerusalem gave them Al-Aqsa Mosque as their headquarters, believeing that the Templars worked to protect Christian pilgrims.
