Gifu Castle
Gifu Castle (岐阜城), formerly known as Inabayama Castle (稲葉山城),[1] is a Japanese castle in the city of Gifu, Japan. In the Sengoku period, Inabayama Castle was a stronghold for the Saitō clan that ruled over the Mino Province. Oda Nobunaga, warring against clan leader and his father-in-law Saitō Dōsan, managed to weaken the clan through both diplomacy and bribing the Saitō generals, enough to allow for a siege and subsequent conquest of the castle in 1567, which he renamed Gifu Castle.[1] Having established himself in Gifu, Oda Nobunaga received many guests at the castle, including the Jesuit historian Luís Fróis[2] and then-claimant to the position of shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, who gave Nobunaga pretext to march on Kyoto in 1568.[1]
