Eteokles (died in 430s BCE) was an Argolian farmer who lived near Epidauros during the 5th century BCE.

Biography

A farmer whose farm was large enough to feed "half of Argolis" according to himself, Eteokles also owned a beautiful white bull.[1]

As he fell ill, he visited the Sanctuary of Asklepios within the Valley of Dreams to find healing. While there, he came across many others who were struck by the same sickness, as well as the Spartan misthios Kassandra. The priest caring for the sick charged Kassandra to bring the sacred white bull for a sacrifice to save all the people, telling her that it had been seen on Mount Koryphum, near the Asine Ruins.[1]

Bandits had overtaken the ruins and slain the bull, however. Kassandra took its heart back to the Sanctuary and the priest, learning that it would be only enough to pray for one life. Eteokles requested to be saved, as did a wealthy widow. There was also a young girl.[1]

If Kassandra chose Eteokles as the receiver of the prayers, Kassandra later met a merchant, who informed her that his good friend Eteokles had perished despite the sacrifice. Following his death, bandits had taken over his farm, and the merchant requested Kassandra's help in ridding the place of them.[2]
