Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby was an English Prime Minister.

In 1857, a contest was held to find a design for the new Foreign Office building. Though he placed second, Prime Minister Derby hired George Gilbert Scott for the job because he loved Scott's Gothic style. Though before Scott could begin, Lord Palmerston was elected Prime Minister.[1]
