Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (Edward Augustus; 1767 – 1820) was the fourth son and fifth child of King George III. His only child by Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Victoria reigned as Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 until 1901.

Biography

Prior to his death, Edward discussed with his daughter Victoria the traditional naming conventions he would like upheld as part of their legacy. Affixing "Albert" to the end of male descendants and "Victoria" to that of female descendants. Queen Victoria would later recall and relay his wish to her own son, the future Edward VII.
