Dented Falchion

The Dented Falchion was a falchion modified with serrations at its point that was sold in Paris at the time of the French Revolution.

Description

The Dented Falchion originated as a fairly conventional falchion, a type of European single-edged, curved sword.[1] The blades of falchions could vary in shape and size,[1][2] and the Dented Falchion in particular bore a wide blade which only expanded in broadness the further it ran from the hilt. In this respect, it was akin to a machete, boasting heavy, hacking power. In its modified form, the Dented Falchion received its appellation for the serration cut into its point which, given the broadness of the blade, was an edge in and of itself. These serrations were designed for the falchion to tear through flesh thereby inflicting grislier wounds on an enemy. In spite of this, it was overall a fairly average weapon in terms of performance for its time, nor was it more effective than its contemporary, the Straight Falchion.[1]

History

When it was originally forged, the Dented Falchion lacked the serrations that came to define it and which were cut into it at a later point as a unique modification. It was subsequently sold in Paris in the midst of the French Revolution.[1]
