The Jinyiwei was an imperial military police which served as the personal guard of Emperors of the Ming dynasty. They took their orders directly from the Emperor and had enough power to overrule most judiciary authorities. As a result they could arrest, prosecute and execute anyone. In the later years of the dynasty, they were placed under control of the eunuchs.
