Signal lamps, typically using Morse code, appeared during the 19th century. It was not until the 19th Century too that signaling flares started to be commonly used on ships as well, thanks to the invention of US businesswoman Martha Coston. During the American Revolution, the Royal Navy still used classic flag signals, or common lanterns at night or due to bad weather. Communications were limited to quite simple messages only.
