Ciara gew up as a wildly free child in the mists of Connacht where her pagan parents encouraged her every whim.

Her mother taught her to sing songs of the Lia Fáil with its mysterious dark and divine power. Which sounds a bit much, frankly, but this account derives from unduly poetic secondary sources.

A running theme in those sources stresses Ciara's deep connection to the scattered pagans and druids who continued in their beliefs.

It was for those pagans that Ciara accepted the post of Ollamh Érenn, the Bard of All Ireland, equal in social standing to the High King himself. Flann offered it to her both in recognition of her creative gifts and to signal the acceptance of pagan Irish in his kingdom.
