A significant religious center since time immemorial. Long before the village existed, the pagan ritual site of Navan exited[sic] nearby. Armagh itself has been important since Saint Patrick build a stone church there in the 5th century. Today, there are two (2! count 'em) St. Patrick's Cathedrals in Amargh.

In the 9th century, efforts were made to turn Armagh into a military as well as an ecclesiastical power.
