Founded by King Dagobert for Benedictine monks in 630, the abbey quickly became one of the most important of France. The kings of France were accustomed to go praying to the abbey before leaving for war or crusade and several queens and daughters of kings spent part of their life at the Abbey.*

During the French Revolution, local mercenaries took possession of the Abbey after the monks were thrown out. Rumors speak of them trading in treasures stolen from the tombs of the kings.
