Damokles was a 4th century BCE Sicilian courtier.

Best known for the story of the Sword of Damokles, the man wished for ultimate fortune, but learned his lesson.[1]

Behind the scenes

As the Peloponnesian War preceded the time of Damokles by almost a century, it's likely the blade was actually known by another name at the time.
