Aegean Prince

The Aegean Prince was a bronze shield which belonged to a prince from Aegae that was found in Egypt during the 1st century BCE.

Description

The metalwork design of the Aegean Prince was intricate, resulting in a construction that was superior to that of average contemporary shields. It was especially suited to blocking projectiles while its blood-red coloration inspired ferocity. By 48 BCE, the shield had evidently been a bit worn from its years in combat, with its circular shape slightly distorted, yet it was no less sturdy.[1]

History

Once the personal shield of a prince from Aegae, hence its name, the Aegean Prince had made its way to Egypt by 48 BCE during the reign of the Ptolemy XIII of the Ptolemaic dynasty.[1]
