The Conway Cabal was a supposed conspiracy led by Major General Thomas Conway with the aim to unseat George Washington as the head of the Continental Army and replace him with General Horatio Gates.

Conway, serving as a General under Washington maintained frequent correspondence with Gates, mainly about what he perceived as Washington's failings at his job, such as his losses at Germantown and Brandywine. When Washington learned of the correspondence, both Conway and Gates had to go before Congress to clear their names, though in the end, Washington's supporters rallied around him and the episode ended with Gates apologizing and Conway being forced to resign.[1]
