Constantine Flavius (Latin: Flavius Constantinus; fl. 447–464) was the praetorian prefect to Roman Emperor Theodosius II in the latter years of his reign.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 447,[2] a major earthquake affected Constantinople, and the city's walls crumbled. Under the threat of an invasion by the Attila the Hun and his hordes, Theodosius ordered Constantine to repair the walls with haste. Though Constantine had the workers needed at his disposal, they lacked motivation, and the work proceeded too slowly for both Constantine and Theodosius's liking. Constantine then came up with the idea to turn the work into a competition by dividing the men into groups and putting each group in charge of repairing a certain section of the wall. In the end, the work of years was finished in months, and their enemies, learning of this feat, decided not to attack.[1]
