Christian (Paris)

Christian was a French shoemaker and shop owner who operated in one of Paris's more salubrious streets. His shop was a favorite of Julie de la Serre, who would visit it regularly with her daughter Élise, once every two weeks. He wore a white wig tied back with a black ribbon, a justacorps and white breeches, portraing himself as a half nobleman, half footman, which Élise remarked was how he saw himself on the social ladder.

On one of the de la Serres' visits in 1776, after arranging their payment and delivery, Julie noticed that their carriage and coachman were missing. She became suspicious, although she assured Christian and her daughter that everything was alright and that their coachman was merely late. Christian warned her that the people were dangerous and it was beginning to get dark, but Julie decided to leave the shop with Élise and told him that he should go back to his next customer. Knowing Julie as someone who rarely changed her mind, Christian bid the pair goodbye and returned to his shop.
