The weapon installed on the Adrestia

The Chimera's Breath was a naval weapon developed by an Achaian engineer named Gyras circa 422 BCE. At its core, the Chimera's Breath was a front-facing flamethrower designed to burn and destroy an opposing vessel, named after the mythical creature.

Originally designed for use aboard the Skylla, flagship of the Tempest's fleet that was blockading Achaia, it eventually found its way onto the Adrestia when the Spartan misthios Kassandra convinced its creator to share his designs.[1][2] Once aboard the Adrestia, it was used against the Skylla to end the Order of the Ancients' blockade of the region.[3]

Behind the scenes

Chimera's Breath is based on the weapon known as Greek fire. Contrary to popular belief, the flamethrower was known even BC and is not anachronism - for example, during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), a ground-based flamethrower was used, which helped burn about 400 enemy fighters. Later, it was also used at sea, including for the defense of Rhodes. Portable models were also invented later, even before the BC.
