Charles V of France
Charles V (21 January 1338 – 16 September 1380), known as the Wise, was King of France from 1364 to his death.
During his reign, France was involved in the Hundred Years' War, and many construction projects were undertaken by him. One of these involved the conversion of the Louvre into a residence, and Charles moved there from the Conciergerie.
Another project was the Bastille, a fortress intended to protect the Porte Saint-Antoine gate and the adjoining Hôtel Saint-Pol. The Saint-Pol in turn had been constructed under Charles away from the busy area around the Louvre.
