Charles Messier (1730 – 1817) was a French astronomer who discovered the existence of the Whirlpool Galaxy.

Legacy

In a 2012 Animus 2.0 Database entry written by Shaun Hastings, he theorized that the 414 steps of the Campanile di Giotto (completed in 1359) predicted the discovery of the Whirlpool Galaxy by Messier 414 years later in 1773, though quickly retracted this statement.[1]
