Charles II, Duke of Lorraine
Charles II (1364 – 1431) was Duke of Lorraine from 1390 until his death.[1] He was the father-in-law to René of Anjou.[2]
History
In January 1429, Jean de Metz arranged a meeting between Jeanne d'Arc and Robert de Baudricourt, though de Baudricourt arranged for Charles II, his liege lord, to meet the young woman instead, as the duke was keen to meet her. At this point in his life, Charles was 65 years old and quite ill, which historian Simon Hathaway posited was most likely the reason the duke agreed to meet with Jeanne. During the meeting, Jeanne requested the aid of Charles' son-in-law, René of Anjou, and other men to accompany her, before scolding Charles for his morals and telling him to "put aside his mistress and return to his wife".[3] Though Jeanne had been rude, he approved of her[2] and allowed her to journey to Chinon, assigning several men to escort her.[3]
Legacy
In 2016, while discussing Charles, Victoria Bibeau asked Simon Hathaway if he was an Assassin, to which the historian replied it was highly doubtful.[3]
