Byodoin Temple (平等院) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, formerly part of Yamashiro Province during the Sengoku period.

In late June 1582, the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and samurai Yasuke traveled to the temple to meet the head of the Ise clan. There, they met a sickly monk who revealed himself as Ise Sadatame, the former head of the clan who lost his position after being poisoned by his younger brother Sadaoki. Sadatame asked the two to retrieve a correspondence from his brother that was lost by his messenger near Arashiyama, as well as to seek out his ally Ujimasa at Kiyomizudera Temple, who can help the two gain access to Sadaoki's stronghold at Yamazaki Castle.[1]
