Butterflies have a four-stage life cycle and go through metamorphosis, starting in a larval form they go into a pupa and emerges as a fully grown butterfly, depending on the type of butterfly it has often brightly coloured wings. Butterflies are distributed worldwide except Antarctica, totalling some 18,500 different species.
History
In 754 Chang'an, the Flower Banquet festival at Xingqing Palace featured, among acrobatic dancers and jesters, a show of illusionists in which peonies were transformed into butterflies, which then soared in the direction of the Flower and Calyx Pavilion's balcony. There, Yang Yuhuan caught one on her finger and redirected it to the one-eyed delegate of Yang Guozhong, signalling to the announcers that the winner of that year's grand competition for the most beautiful flower exhibit was Guozhong's "Shifting Spring Cage".[1]
