The bouleuterion

The Bouleuterion of Olympia was a building within the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece.

History

Among the very first buildings constructed on the site, the bouleuterion was where the council of the Sanctuary dealt with relevant matters, whether it was the appointment of a priest, settling disagreements between the competitors and the judges, or deciding on statues. The building also housed the records of the sanctuary, as well as the altar and statue of the god Zeus in his guise as Zeus Horkios, before whom athletes and their trainers swore the Olympic Oath.

During the 428 BCE Olympic Games, the bouleuterion was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.
