Multi-storey buildings with high ceilings, large windows, marble or wood flooring, with a second floor balcony for viewing one's vast property, plantation mansions were a symbol of the plantation owner's wealth and success. The mansion was generally placed in the most central location of the plantation so that it would be visible and recognizable from a distance.

Notes: They were usually a combination of Greek, French Creole, and Caribbean architecture. – DM
