Died: Unknown

Most of Rowland Sharp's early life was unremarkable, spent around the Kentish coast, where he worked aboard fishing doggers to gut and clean the day's catch. Returning from one of these fishing trips in 1716, Sharp was press-ganged into service aboard a fleet bound for the West Indies to protect British colonial interests.

Though he chafed at the harsh conditions and bullying from officers, he proved a popular figure amongst the other deckhands. Men made fast friends of the easygoing Sharp, whose genuine disposition they trusted. Corralling a ragtag group of sailors together, Sharp deserted the Navy a year later in 1717.

For much of the following year, Sharp's gang ran small-time smuggling operations.
