Miletios, also known as Miletus or Miletos, was an ancient Greek city-state on the western coast of Anatolia.[1] Build following an orthogonal plan of islands, it influenced the creation of Hippodamos of Miletos's "Hippodamian plan" of city layouts.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

Aspasia, the partner of the Athenian statesman Perikles, was born in the city in 470 BCE. [citation needed] Other Milesians of note include the philosophers Thales, Anaximandros, and Anaximenes.[3]

In the 15th century, it was incorporated to the Ottoman Empire.[2]

During his latter years, Leonardo da Vinci, with the aid of Thomas More, selected this location as a haven, a secretive location conducive to the construction of an Assassin refugesmeant to train and initiate apprentices. Within a month of his death on 2 May 1519,[4] the Assassins managed to decipher the clues he left behind and uncovered the site.[5]
