Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, or simply the Frari, is a church located within Venice.
Description
Built by Franciscan monks, the church is the second largest church in Venice. Under the guidance of Saint Francis, the church adopted a basic exterior decoration design.[1]
Despite its size, it had the status of a minor basilica. It stood on the Campo dei Frari at the heart of the San Polo district. The imposing edifice was built of brick, and was one of the city's three notable churches built in the Italian Gothic style. As with many Venetian churches, the exterior was rather plain. The interior contained the only rood screen still in place in Venice. The building was completed, after almost a century of construction, in 1338.[2]
The Assassin Ezio Auditore visited the Frari during the 15th century, where he learned the Climb Leap skill from local thief Rosa.[2]
In 1512, Ezio returned to the church, where he became married with Sofia Sartor.[3]
