You basically answered your own doubt with the very next sentence.

To think that people wouldn't adapt to a new time period when they knew it would not stay in the same one for the whole series is fallacy. The only problem with the transition was implementation.

Revelations was a matter of too little gameplay content and a rushed storyline, and I'm glad the repercussions of it are slowly being removed with Black Flag onward, but when you reflect on it, important things pass by with the years but you're staying in the same area. Kingston, Havana and Nassau all have the same theme to them, whereas Florence, Forli and Venice had their own distinct themes and a non-saturated colour pallet.

To end on a final note, it's a little hard to have faith in Ubisoft when they're eager to shove another product and transmedia under your nose every year at the same point in time. That makes the "Ubisoft are milking us" feeling even worse when they're peddling all their wares in one go at a time where the market is highly competitive but people have other monetary commitments.
