it has been mentioned that it applies anywhere and not just scripted, the boston demo for instance shows it being used when he is going on to the ship. and from what i see in the demos the assassination button hasnt changed, the O button appears on screen in the demos as its context sensitive and you can see it being pressed when picking up the weapon and is also seen to be the button used to drop and swap weapons and counter. what gave you the impression they had been switched.
