To be quite honest, I found AC1 to have the worst story, seeing as it was basically just "Go here, kill this dude.", but that's kind of expected with the first game. Also, I think I heard that the city of Rome was meant to added into AC2, but they changed it to involve a whole game around it, so maybe they were working on pre-production of ACR at the same time as one team was making and developing Brotherhood.
