No, that would be annoying! It would be like TESIV Oblivion where your annoying faction members are glued to your ass and start talking to random people in the street and get left behind. I thought that the apprentices hiding was cool because you don't have to worry about them getting hurt or killed. Plus it shows that they are very stealthy and can hide in plain sight, waiting for your order.
