A problem I have been trying to explain, GD. To put it in simple words, fanons are adding to the mainspace page count, since they can be searched. If we are to disable the search option, then they will not add to it.
Now, as for this idea of having images link to the article? It's called "Image map" and it isn't as easy as it looks. If you plan on formatting the "main fanon" in Wikipedia style, user won't bother using the image map. They just use the link you have along with the summary. Having the content in the same article can help a few people who might want to refer something they might have forgotten while reading the fanon on another page.
I'll say this again (As mentioned in fanon comments and Guard Dog) Use the tabber extension, it keeps the content in a single page, it's easy to format..
