I guess they just realized they needed to have Ezio have 'official' offspring, and they were running out of time. :p

Sofia being 17 years Ezio's junior never really bothered me; I guess I just considered them to be a good enough match to ignore the age difference. As it is, she was 37 when she gave birth to Flavia: old for a primigravida, especially by Renaissance standards. She couldn't have been much older to be likely unable to bear children. ;)
