I know what the article said. But GameInformer does not make AC canon, they used a real world source for that. Also, after Revelations where it seems that everyone knew that the Templars were the Byzantines (namely Suleiman and Tarik), I don't know if it would still really be safe to say the Templars stayed underground until the 1700s.
