IF my hypothesis is correct then as someone posted somewhere down this now 47 comment discussion, listen to what Minerva tells you, "You were birthed from our loins and that of our enemy's." This means that the born into( I state this because of how not all Assassino are born into it.) the Assassini are Humans that are able to see the blue shimmer (Eagle Vision) They have the ability to see inside of people, yet do not have full knowledge of their intentions. (Only if ally/enemy) So, what if Desmond is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ? He is birthed from those of great power, and the enemies of them. (Humans) This would mean that the next one would be his eqivalent would be either Eve, or The Virgin Mary. Just a very long thought. :)
