The assassins were real but nothing like they were in the games, during the crusades an assassin had infiltrated Saladins camp and left a note with a knife stuck in it proving that during the crusades the Christians and muslims hired assassins to threaten the others. However there is no evidence of them existing today in the modern world. But Templars did/do exist many organisations such as the illuminati are based on the beliefs of the Templars
