I say it so often I may have become boring, but I think the Year of the Four Emperors would be a great setting. Failing that; Ceasare's, Crassus' and Pompey's rise to power would be good.

Also ranking lower down for me, but possible; based around 1066's would be alright.... Witness/participate the battle of King Harold and Duke William, and King Harold Godwinson and King Harold Hardrada and have Hereward of Bourne as an ally... Other events that could be explored around that time... The war with Wales... Malcom and MacBeth. a good number of people and events in that time period.
