Uh, no. The series isn´t about moving forward in time. They can pick any setting, not something that is set between the 1700s and 2000s. Click here. Just because you interpret something in a particular way doesn't make it fact.

Not that World War I wouldn't be interesting, anything would in my opinion. AC4 simply doesn't have to be set in that period.
