If the storyline in the games has any kind of linearity to it, than it would need to be after the American Revolution. Since the setting of AC1 was chronologically followed by AC2, ACB, ACR and not apparently AC3. I think it would be a little strange to have these memories advancing through time, than all of a sudden jump back a thousand years.
