Why is Japanese culture not a good basis for a historical fiction game? Hundreds of games have been set in Feudal Japan; Assassin's Creed would be one of the few to portray the era accurately, however, which I think is much-needed. Europeans, Americans and Africans are all quite aware of the basic Japanese culture.

Unlike the Mohawk culture, which we've had a game focus heavily on. I don't see why a Japan-centered game would be 'alien' and having a half Mohawk protagonist is not.
