Yes, that's a possibility I thought of as well. But somehow, that doesn't fit in well with the Rift. That particular Rift is a bit vague, but to me it seems to focus around the people revolting against oppression, with the Assassins directing them in the right direction. And in the picture of Zedong on the banner, the people are revolting in favor of Zedong and not against him.

Yes, this is a very vague explanation, but I did my best. ;)
