Well I imagine that like Lenin, he was initially deceived by Stalin, believing him to be an ally. Something very interesting about the communist world was initially that everything Russia did, the other communist nations soon followed suit. Once China emerged as a communist superpower there was an intense amount of rivalry between the two as China was willing to act independently of the communist bloc and Stalin greatly feared that they would supplant him as the leading communist nation. Despite being a technical ally he was far from a staunch supporter.
