So far, we've all been assuming that the Templars are the ones that cause this disaster that Desmond needs to stop. Who says that is true? Maybe, for all we know, the Templar Eye-Abstergo is being made to stop the disaster the same as the Assassins are trying to stop it, they just don't know it. The Assassins believe that it's so the Templars can control the world, but who says for sure?

I think it would be an interesting and unexpected twist that Desmond fatally wounds Vidic and shoots down Eye-Abstergo, and as Vidic is dying, he reveals that Eye-Abstergo was actually to stop the end of the world. Then the world ends.
